What you will learn

Course description:

The course is designed to advance students with little knowledge of coronary artery anatomy to a level where they can recognize and name the major vessels, and also for students who have basic knowledge and need to advance.  The course starts with the basic framework of the coronary circulation, so that the student can gain 3D conceptualization.  Thereafter the names of the main branches and their distributions are described, consequently advancing to the smaller but equally important branches. Anatomical specimens in which the arteries have been injected with barium are used in conjunction with angiographic and CT cases, to exemplify the anatomy in correlative projections. The module concludes with examples of atherosclerotic and thrombotic disease of the arteries.

Course objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • describe the basic organization of the coronary circulation
  • list the names of the branches of the left and right coronary arteries
  • discuss the territorial distribution of the vessels
  • discuss the concept of dominance
  • recognize the difference between atherosclerotic stenosis and thrombotic occlusion
