Course description: 

The purpose of the course is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the anatomy of the adrenal gland and how to apply that knowledge within medical imaging. Utilizing multiple imaging modalities, this course explores the basic anatomy and physiology of the adrenal gland, a pair of glands located in the retroperitoneum, squeezed between several organs. The learner will also gain an understanding of the more common pathological conditions affecting the adrenal glands. The course will also explore the specific diagnostic procedures associated with those conditions. The learner will be able to apply the anatomical knowledge attained in his/her effort to identify and contrast normal and abnormal images, as well as how anatomy applies in certain situations.



Course objectives: 

  • Recognize the basic anatomy of the adrenal glands.
  • Be able to locate this organ within the abdominal cavity and identify the main structures of the adrenal gland utilizing cross sectional medical imaging.
  • Describe the adrenal gland's function and its relation to the other organs in the abdominal region.
  • Differentiate the role of radiographic examination, CT, US, and MRI in imaging studies of the adrenal glands.
