Course description: 

The aim of the course is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the anatomy of the esophagus and how to apply that knowledge within medical imaging. Utilizing multiple imaging modalities, this course explores the basic anatomy and physiology of the esophagus. The learner will also gain an understanding of the more common pathological conditions affecting the esophagus. The course will also explore the specific diagnostic procedures associated with those conditions. The learner will be able to apply the anatomical knowledge attained in his/her effort to identify and contrast normal and abnormal images, as well as how anatomy applies in certain situations.



Course objectives: 

Upon completion of this module, the learner will be able to:


  • Describe the basic anatomy and physiology of the esophagus
  • Locate and identify the main structures on the plain film
  • Explain how common pathological conditions affect the esophagus
  • Recognize how anatomy applies in clinical situations
  • Identify, compare and contrast normal and abnormal images of the esophagus
  • Differentiate the role of endoscopy, X-ray, Computed Tomography, and PET in imaging studies of the esophagus
