Course description: 

The aim of the course is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the anatomy of the great veins and how to apply that knowledge within medical imaging. Utilizing multiple imaging modalities, this course explores the basic anatomy of the cardiovascular system with a specific focus on the vena cava, the central vein that carries blood back from the body to the right atrium. This course also explores the specific diagnostic procedures associated with the vena cava. The learner will be able to apply the anatomical knowledge attained in his/her effort to identify and contrast normal and abnormal images, as well as how anatomy applies in certain situations.

  • Describe the basic anatomy of the vena cava.
  • Identify the main structures and functions of the vena cava utilizing cross sectional medical imaging.
  • Discuss the relationship of this major blood vessel with the major arteries and veins of the body.
  • Compare normal and abnormal images of the vena cava.
  • Differentiate the role of CT, US, Venography, and MRI in diagnosis and support of interventional therapeutic procedures.
