Course description: 

In this course the theory and practice of the Nuclear Medicine procedure Bone Scintigraphy will be discussed. This course will also review bone physiology, the bone scintigraphy procedure, the radiopharmaceuticals utilized, and the strengths and limitations of the procedure.




Course objectives: 

After studying this course the student can:

  • Describe the relevant physiology of bone formation
  • Explain the underlying rationale of bone scintigraphy
  • Outline the procedure of the examination
  • Motivate the choice of the radiopharmaceuticals used
  • List the main indications for referral
  • Describe how these indications present themselves on a bone scintigraphy
  • Explain the strengths and weaknesses of bone scintigraphy
  • Explain the reason of the sensitivity and specificity of the procedure
  • Name the contraindications
  • Describe how bone scan images are displayed
