Course description: 

The technology of storing data has increased dramatically in the past few years. Not only is it increasing in size and format, but also in speed. Lots of data is coming from all directions, very fast. This module will discuss the various forms of data storage; both the traditional ones and the newer methods. Coupled with the rapid increase in the size and speed of data is the ability to search it quickly. The basic concepts behind databases and searching those databases will be reviewed in this module.



Course objectives: 

• Discuss the terminology associated with storing data 
• Describe the various forms of storage media and how they apply to healthcare 
• Explain the concept of data compression and its application to data storage 
• Describe the concept of searching for data 
• Discuss the differences between centralized and distributed data 
• Explain what the "cloud" is and why healthcare is migrating in that direction.
