Course description: 

This course reviews the clinical indication for ultrasound use in traumatic injury, the appropriate sonographic views in the FAST protocol, and normal and abnormal sonographic findings. Ultrasound views discussed include: the right sided Morrison’s pouch, the left perisplenic view, imaging of the pericardium and the pelvis. Attendees will have the opportunity to practice the FAST protocol on live models using Philips ultrasound imaging systems.

Course objectives: 

Upon completion of this course, attendees should be able to:

  • Discuss basic ultrasound image controls and image optimization techniques
  • Explain the appropriate transducer selection for FAST exams
  • Explain the four major views associated with the FAST exam and the normal anatomy associated with each view
  • Discuss the abnormal sonographic findings that can be associated with traumatic injury
