Course description: 

This HIV/AIDS course is designed for the health care professional who would like to learn more about the clinical management and current recommended treatment regimens of the patient that is HIV positive. HAART will be discussed, as well as treatment to control symptoms and to treat concurrent opportunistic and co-infections.



Course objectives: 

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1) describe the clinical management of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected patient
2) name the various antiretroviral drug categories, their recommended treatment regimens, and the considerations and side effects of each
3) define highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and its preferred components, as well as identify therapy guidelines;
4) identify the prophylaxis medications used to prevent co-infections and opportunistic infections
5) identify the common opportunistic and co-infections that may occur in the HIV positive person, and the treatment for each.
