Course description: 

The purpose of this case is to illustrate the progression of multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCK), and to discuss the classifications of cystic renal disease in the fetus, sonographic findings of MCK, associated findings, differential diagnosis and prognosis. The information is presented in a case study format. By reviewing the medical history and the results from both prenatal and postnatal studies, the characteristics of this pathology will be examined.




Course objectives: 

Following the review of this information, as well as the discussion provided in the library, the learner will be able to:

  • Explain the classification of cystic disease of the fetus and neonate
  • List the typical ultrasound finding of multicystic dysplastic kidney
  • Describe technical tips that help optimize ultrasound image quality
  • Describe the treatment plan and management options for MCK
  • Understand both sides of the controversy regarding non-diagnostic 3-dimensional ultrasound scanning of pregnant women who want images of their fetuses
