Course description: 

This module offers a look at radiation safety in the operating room environment. A historical overview of units of radiation measurement will be given along with discussion on the principles of "As Low As Reasonably Achievable" (ALARA), radiation protection of both personnel and patient, as well as, sharing knowledge on types of radiation generating equipment utilized in the operating room (OR) and the approximate radiation exposures for some diagnostic OR) procedures.



Course objectives: 

After studying the information presented, the learner will be able to:

  • Understand units of radiation, both conventional and Systeme Internationale (SI)
  • Discuss proper radiation protection for patients and personnel
  • Describe the principles of ALARA
  • Recognize the types of radiation generating equipment used in the OR
