Course description: 

This course is about the relation between the thyroid gland and diagnostic nuclear medicine. The course starts with an extensive overview of thyroid development, anatomy, physiology and pathology. Then several nuclear medicine examinations of the thyroid gland will be explored: thyroid scintigraphy, iodine uptake estimation and the perchlorate discharge test.



Course objectives: 

  • describe the embryological development of the thyroid gland
  • identify the importance of the thyroid hormones for the physiology of the human body
  • describe the process of production, storage and excretion of the thyroid hormones
  • outline the control mechanisms in thyroid hormone production and release
  • discuss thyroid pathology
  • explain relevant aspects of the radionuclide examinations 'thyroid scintigraphy', 'iodine uptake estimation' and 'perchlorate discharge test'
