What you will learn

Course description:

Using a case study format, this course presents a case of severe mitral regurgitation due to flail mitral leaflet. Transthoracic and transesophageal images are presented to illustrate the key echocardiographic findings, as well as correlation with coronary angiography and surgical findings. Intraoperative TEE images both before and after surgical repair are also presented. The etiology, clinical presentation, and echocardiographic assessment of mitral regurgitation are reviewed in detail, with specific emphasis on flail mitral leaflet.

Course objectives:

Following the review of the modality results and the discussion provided in the library, you will be able to:

  • Understand the utility of echocardiography in the assessment of patients with new onset of dyspnea and heart failure
  • Describe the differential pathogenic mechanisms for mitral valvular regurgitation
  • Describe the mechanism, clinical setting, clinical presentation, and echocardiography feature of flail mitral leaflet due to chordal rupture
  • Discuss the 2-dimensional (2D) and Doppler techniques for assessment of mitral valve regurgitation, including expected findings with severe regurgitation
  • Identify the role of transesophageal (TEE) for intraoperative guidance of mitral valve surgery.
