This eLearning module for noninvasive vascular ultrasound technologists is an ideal way for sonographers to learn how to image the carotid arteries. Topics covered include indications for the exam, carotid artery anatomy, B-mode, Color and Spectral Doppler assessment, signs and symptoms of carotid disease, and carotid disease management.

Course objectives: 

The Getting Started Imaging section will:

  • Discuss the role of carotid duplex imaging in diagnosis and prevention
  • Identify normal anatomy of the neck
  • Discuss the appropriate transducer and tissue specific preset selection for carotid duplex imaging

The Carotid Duplex Exam section will:

  • Discuss the 2D/B-Mode, color and spectral Doppler images required for a complete bilateral exam
  • Describe the technique for obtaining optimal pulsed wave spectral waveforms

The Carotid Stenosis section will:

  • Recognize the different techniques needed when carotid stenosis is present
  • Describe the grading of carotid stenosis severity
