Course description: 

This one-hour Virtual Speaker-Led Training course will cover basic fetal cardiac embryology in order to better understand how the heart structures form and how we must prove normalcy of the segments of the heart attaching to each other during fetal heart screening. Fetal circulation will be discussed along with the 3 fetal circulatory shunts that are unique to the fetus. Detailed fetal heart chamber-by-chamber anatomy will be discussed to aid the sonographer in the fetal heart evaluation.  

Virtual training is a facilitator-led, live online learning event that is delivered in a virtual environment. Participants can be geographically dispersed and also individually connected. Each learner uses their own computer or other compatible device. Virtual training is synchronous, meaning that participants are connected at the same time as the facilitator.Philips virtual training events typically range from 60-120 minutes in length with a maximum of 10 participants. This socially engaging, purposefully-designed training allows participants the same quality education of an instructor-led classroom without the need or expense of traveling.



Course objectives: 

Upon completion of this course, attendees should be able to: 

  • Discuss fetal heart embryologic “looping” and the importance for the final location of the ventricles
  • List the 3 shunts in fetal circulation
  • Describe cardiac anatomy including the chambers, valves, papillary muscles and chordae tendineae
  • Discuss the “spiraling” of the truncus arteriosus during embryologic development to form the great vessels
