Course description: 

This course reviews the technical and cognitive skills required to perform a focused cardiac ultrasound exam. Attendees will review basic ultrasound technique, image optimization controls, and the optimal acoustic windows for a focused echocardiogram. Topics will include normal cardiac ultrasound anatomy, identification of ventricular dysfunction and a review of pericardial assessment with a focus on tamponade physiology.

Upon completion of this course, the learner should
be able to:

  • Discuss the indications and contraindications for focused cardiac ultrasound (echocardiography)
  • Explain left ventricular function and ejection fraction
  • Discuss pulmonary artery and right heart pressure
  • Describe the major views of the focused cardiac ultrasound exam (parasternal, apical, subcostal)
  • Discuss pericardial assessment, pericardial effusion and tamponade
