This course will provide an overview of the fundamentals of performing an obstetrical ultrasound for the first trimester along with the second and third trimester.  Topics covered include a review of the required views, measurements and fetal anatomical structures.

Course objectives: 

The First Trimester section will: 
• Define the location of the pregnancy and confirm viability of the pregnancy 
• Identify normal structures visible in the first trimester 
• Apply findings of first trimester ultrasound to pregnancy dating (estimating gestational age)

The Second and Third Trimester section will: 
• Recognize normal maternal anatomy in ultrasound images 
• Define the number of fetuses and identify fetal viability 
• Recognize the fetal lie and presentation 
• Evaluate the placenta and placental placement 
• Assess the amniotic fluid

The Measurements and Dating section will: 
• Describe the technique for measuring fetal size parameters 
• Explain how fetal measurements can be used to estimate gestational age and Estimated Fetal Weight

The Basic Fetal Anatomy of the Abdomen and Pelvis section will: 
• Recognize the common normal fetal anatomy of the abdomen 
• Recognize the sonographic appearance of a three vessel umbilical cord and umbilical cord insertion

The Basic Fetal Anatomy of the Chest section will: 
• Identify normal thorax and heart anatomy as visualized on ultrasound 
• Identify the main ultrasound criteria for a normal fetal heart scan

The Basic Fetal Anatomy of the Head and Face section will: 
• Recognize the normal fetal anatomy of the head and face visualized on ultrasound 
• Identify the normal fetal anatomy of the face visualized on ultrasound

The Basic Fetal Anatomy of the Spine and Extremities section will: 
• Identify the normal fetal spine anatomy and examine the spine in multiple planes 
• Determine the presence or absence of fetal arms and legs
